IB Maths AI is a course about using mathematics: building models, reading data, choosing the right test and explaining what an answer means in context. The GDC is allowed on every paper, so the marks go to setting up the problem correctly and interpreting the result. These notes follow the Applications and Interpretation syllabus topic by topic, with SL and HL in one note and HL-only content clearly tagged. Every worked example shows the M1 and A1 marks, every Paper skill comes with GDC steps, and topics leaving the course in May 2029 are flagged.
What every note gives you
- SL and HL in one note. HL-only parts carry an HL ONLY tag, so SL students can skip them.
- GDC steps for every skill, because AI allows the calculator on every paper.
- Marked like the markscheme. Worked examples show the M1, A1 and R1 marks, including the "interpret in context" marks.
- Formula booklet tags, so you know what is given and what you must learn.
- 2029 syllabus status. Topics that leave the course in May 2029 are flagged, so you know what you still need.
- Modelling and IA ideas, because AI rewards real-world thinking.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Maths AI and Maths AA?
AI (Applications and Interpretation) focuses on modelling, statistics and using technology; AA (Analysis and Approaches) focuses on algebra, proof and calculus by hand. Many topic names overlap, but AI questions are set in context and the GDC is allowed on every AI paper. If you want the algebra behind a topic, each AI note links to the matching AA note.
Do these notes cover the 2029 AI syllabus?
Yes. The new course is first examined in May 2029. It keeps the current content with some topics removed: logarithms and the trapezoidal rule at SL, and complex numbers, the vector product, the Poisson distribution and some hypothesis tests at HL. Those topics are still covered, with a Syllabus note box, for students sitting exams up to November 2028.
Are the notes for SL or HL?
Both. Each note covers the SL content first and tags the extra HL (AHL) content HL ONLY.
Can I use my GDC on every paper?
Yes, in AI technology is required on all written papers. The notes show the GDC steps, but you still need to write the setup (the equation, the distribution, the test) to earn the method marks.
Who writes the notes?
Riyaz Shaikh ("Riyaz Sir"), a Mumbai-based mentor with 15+ years of experience teaching IB, IGCSE and A Level maths and physics one-to-one.
Are these official IB notes?
No. They are independent notes, not produced or endorsed by the International Baccalaureate Organization.
